Tate Music Group is proud to announce the release of Tiffany Alvord’s newest album. “My Dream” has debuted at Number 2 on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter charts following a pre-sale campaign created by Tate Music Group. Tate Music Group sent out a press announcement for the pre-release to over 4,500 media contacts and premiered the “My Dream” Pre-Release commercial on YouTube and National Television Networks a week prior to her December 20th release. During that time, fans of Tiffany Alvord’s music were able to buy “My Dream” at a special price. Tate Music Group has currently made “My Dream”available for digital download on iTunes worldwide, and her official CD Release will soon follow nationwide. The CD is also available for purchase on the Tate Publishing Bookstore. TMG expects great things from the young YouTube starlet and her new recording career.

On an "as needed" basis, our accepted artists and bands receive (at no cost) a professional studio recording, studio musicians, producers, CD production, release, nationwide distribution and promotion by our in-house staff, along with ongoing marketing and publicity. To see more on each of these aspects, check out the brief videos covering each step of the process here.

Our booking agents schedule about 200 events per month for our artists, and this does not include what our artists are booking for themselves, which we then publicize. You can see a calendar of events here. You can also see some of the big-name venues that some of our artists benefit from.
While we do require the refundable $1,990 setup fee for non-celebrity-status artists, we have signed several high-profile artists including Neal McCoy, Lee Greenwood, and Roy Clark. TMG picks up the yearly tab for all non-celebrity-status bands and artists for their booking agent, publicist, radio promoter and marketing rep.
Voices of Glory left the major label deal they were signed to when they took 5^th place on America’s Got Talent, and opted to sign with TMG instead.
We have lined up numerous artists for major festivals around the nation.Here are a few recent ones.
We have national distribution through the largest distributor of independent music in North America, E1 Entertainment. This provides digital distribution to all major players and more, including Itunes, Amazon etc. When warranted, we have partnerships in place that allow us distribution through brick and mortar retail stores such as Hastings, Barnes and Nobel, Best Buy etc. We’ve had artists placed in Best Buy and Wal-Mart around the nation (those two retailers aren’t guaranteed for every artist because we have to show proof of sales before we get it.)
In 2009 and 2010 we hosted an Artist of the Year event, whereby we had all of our artists entered into a contest, narrowed down by online voting, and we flew the top 3 out to Oklahoma City for an all-expenses-paid week of rehearsals, dinners, time with the staff, and fellowship, which was capped off by a live-streaming event and judges from several different labels including Universal and Capitol, as well as the Billboard World Songwriting Contest. Here are blogs (unsolicited by us) written by winners Jeff Chandler and Chuck Tocco about their experiences with TMG. Of course you have to consider that they each won $15,000 cash and opportunities to play at major festivals like Rock the Universe and Rock the Light opening up for Newsboys, Skillet, Jars of Clay, and TobyMac!
A few months ago we began producing music videos for our artists. It’s not guaranteed in every contract, but an artist can choose to either do full studio production with us at TMG's expense, or to do production on their own and we do a music video instead. Here’s a sample of a hip-hop,country, and CCM.
In March we took 5 of our artists to the largest independent music festival, South by Southwest. See a write-up about that showcase from the Oklahoma Gazette here.
We fully believe in the power of social media and encourage our artists to stay on that trend as well. With 20K followers on Twitter and 3k followers on Facebook, we understand what a powerful tool it can be.
We have a first-class, multi-million dollar manufacturing plant where we create all of our CDs, books, posters, tickets, t-shirt, bookmarks, etc. This means we are able to offer the lowest buy-back rates and no minimums.
Last July we launched Variance Magazine, a quarterly online magazine featuring music, movies, and books. We feature mainstream artists, highlight our own artists right alongside top 40 artists, and bring in user-generated content as well. Our covers have featured the Goo Goo Dolls, Yellowcard, and Kristin Chenoweth. We average more than 100,000 hits on each issue, and we are currently filming a pilot episode for Variance TV which will launch on a local cable channel first for testing before we launch nationally.
We run national television commercials for our artists, on the cable network of their choice. In the last 7 days we’ve had commercials on MTV, CMT, BET, VH1, MTV2, FUSE, Great American Country, Fox News Channel, E! Entertainment, Comedy Central, and others. We have different campaigns for different artists depending on whether we’re promoting their CD’s release or an event. Each commercial averages 40,000 impressions. We’ve created a revolutionary system of getting radio airplay for our artists, including partnering with about 400 Christian radio stations nationwide, where we program the shows and are able to play our artists right next to top-40 artists. See more about that and the other ways we promote artists for radio here. Also, through our efforts Jeff Chandler broke into the top 10 on radio.
Artists and entertainment attorneys, whom have reviewed other label contracts, appreciate the fact that our contracts are concise, in plain English, allows artists to keep the rights to their music, retain creative control, terminate at any time without penalty, earn royalties higher than industry standard, AND get their $1,990 setup fee refunded once 2500 CD's are sold in distribution, or purchased by the artist for personal sale and profit. There’s not a better or fairer deal out there!

Hey guys,

I just wanted to say again how great of an experience it was recording last week. Don was amazing at putting the music together, and Houston was the smoothest guy I have ever worked with in a studio. It seemed liked Houston know what I was thinking before I could get the words out at time. And all you ladies in the office working hard and getting it done are all great, putting up with everything from us crazy musicians. All in all my journey with TMG has exceeded my expectations.

I can't wait to see and hear the finished product.

SXSW: Tate Music Group/Variance Magazine Showcase

A widely varied showcase, from hip-hop to hard rock to singer/songwriter

The final event at The Buffalo Lounge was a Tate Music Group/Variance showcase. After treating listeners to a swanky food spread and free drinks, the music kicked off with Michelle Buzz. Buzz’s piano-based singer/songwriter tunes fit in very neatly next to staples of the genre like Fiona Apple and Michelle Branch. Her stage presence was very pleasant and inviting, as she talked comfortably to the audience between songs. She’s very young (still in college), so she has a long songwriting career ahead of her if she keeps on.

Justin Cross played next, bringing some acoustic folk to the room. He caught my eye by rocking a Woody Guthrie t-shirt and a harmonica for a few tunes. His fingerpicking kept my ears tuned in. There’s few things I like more than a good fingerpicked acoustic guitar, and Cross, along with his second guitarist, kept me pleased. Even when his set veered toward poppier grounds, the songs were still quite strong.

Scarlitt Redemption’s pop/rock set was a contrast with hard rock act We the People, which followed. The former employed five people, the latter just two. Scarlitt had a relatively static stage presence, letting their music do the heavy lifting; the guitarist for We the People headbanged, swung his hair, and moved about. Scarlitt’s set was heavy on hummable melodies, while We the People went for heavy riffs and pounding rhythms. Their disparate sounds created a diversity in the lineup that I thought wouldn’t be able to be continued.

That is, until Snorlaxx took the stage. Snorlaxx is a hip-hop act from Tulsa that consists of two bassists, a drummer, a rapid-fire rapper and and another absent member. (“He’s in China,” the rapper said, “with his cat General Meow.”) I love bass, rhythm and hip-hop, so I was stoked as soon as I heard what they were about. And as soon as I actually heard them, I was hooked. Their bassists play off each other, making complex, melodically interesting constructions for the rapper to go nuts over. And he takes their energy and feeds it back, barking, speaking and shouting his way through the raps as if his life depended on it.

The crowd swelled with every song they played; people were coming in the door even in the last song of their two-song encore (one band was unable to make their set, leaving extra time for Snorlaxx after people yelled for them to keep playing). The members could have played longer, time-wise, but they had run out of material. They performed everything they had written in their set, and they left everything they had on stage. The guys bounced around the stage like pinballs, with the rapper occasionally leaving the stage to work his words in the audience.

It was an electrifying set, and it left me wanting more. Snorlaxx is on to something, and I suggest you hear what it is they’re on to before everyone else does. It was an incredibly fitting end to The Buffalo Lounge at SXSW. More please!

Acoustic pop vocalist Ashley Windham landed a record deal in a most unconventional manner: by not even expecting one

It’s every artist’s dream: Finish a set, and an impressed stranger walks up and offers a record deal. Any number of bands will tell you it doesn’t happen that way, but Oklahoma City singer/songwriter Ashley Windham won’t. That’s how she ended up signed to Tate Music Group.

“I was playing a gig at The Mantel,” she said. “There was a party going on.”

That party was attended by Brianne Webb, A&R director for Tate.

“I’m always listening to music while I’m out,” said Webb, whose ears perked up at Windham’s acoustic guitar and dusky alto pipes. Webb struck up a conversation with Windham between sets, and kept the conversation going with Windham’s father, who was acting as her manager.

Two weeks later, Windham was officially signed to the Mustang-based, national record label.

“It all happened quickly,” Webb said.

The speed is not the only rare element of Windham’s signing, as Tate rarely scouts for new talent. Many artists submit their work to the label for distribution, but only 8 percent are accepted.

Windham’s sound clarifies some of the mystery behind her quick turn of events. Her adult contemporary pop style includes several influences that strike a chord in modern listeners’ ears.

“Her originals would appeal to pop fans and country fans. She would appeal to wide audiences,” said Webb. “She has good lyrics about relationships — and a girl’s take on them — that girls would relate to.”

The new material Windham is working on with guitarist John Cross incorporates even more sounds.

“We want it to sound more folky and funky,” Windham said. “We’ll have some calmer songs, but we want people to get up and dance.”

That work ethic is another piece of the puzzle in her overnight success. For the first thing, “overnight” is a relative term; she’s been playing for eight years in both Texas and Oklahoma.

“She works hard,” Webb said. “She knows that it’s hard work, playing small venues on weeknights. But she was playing out, and it got her a record deal.”

That deal led her not only to April’s release of “Hand Picked,” but CD signings, placement in national book and music retailers like Barnes & Noble, and even a nationally televised commercial which played on MTV, Fuse and Spike TV.

“Coming from nowhere, and not winning a contest or anything, it’s all about marketing,” Windham said.

But she hasn’t let all the exposure go to her head.

“She knows she’s talented, but she’s not this diva artist,” Webb said. “She’s passionate. She believes in her music.”

Keeping her tempered is the knowledge that she’s not where she wants to be yet. Windham, a music and social studies teacher by day, hasn’t made the jump to full-time artist, but is working on it. She hopes to release a new EP in late spring 2011, as well as keep playing shows as a duo, trio or full band, depending on the event.

“That’s what I’ve been working with Tate on: getting my name out so my music can grow and grow and grow,” Windham said.

Tate Music Group's Got Talent: Voices of Glory

Tate Music Group artists Voices Of Glory have set a precedence by selling more than 4,500 CDs in record time. Slated for release on January 4, 2011, the rapid advance sales of their self-titled debut have already authorized the return of their artist investment - meaning their project was recorded and is being marketed and distributed for free.

The inspirational and international recording artists are actually the Cole family trio of siblings known individually as Nadia, 10, Avery 14, and Michael, 18. The group came to fame as a result of a string of acclaimed performances on the smash NBC TV show America’s Got Talent. The start of their remarkable journey was inspired by love in the face of tragedy transcended into miracle when their mother Felicia Cole fell into a coma for 8 months. In 2007, when on her way home from class to achieve a fourth advanced degree, she was hit head-on by a drunk driver and severely injured. In response to the devastating news, the children decided they would sing at their mother's bedside in the hope that she would recognize their voices.

“People love these kids wherever they go. They work hard, they are respectful and honest and they have a team behind them that works even harder. I haven’t talked to one person that has had an unpleasant experience with VOG. From the kids, parents to the management team they are a first class operation all the way”, said Chris Rutherford Director of Music Marketing at TMG.

More than an idea for a hit song, belief is an omnipresent theme for the Cole family.

VOG manager and uncle, Gerard Cole said about their ascending success, “You have to be committed to your project and believe in it and what TMG can do for you … to get the job done. TMG can only do what you allow them to do. I was consistently involved with Tate and Tate has consistently been involved with us. If you follow the steps of their program, it will come together. Bottom line, it’s about believing … it’s important to concentrate on what you can do through press, marketing and social networking, Gerard Cole said.

At times, Cole said there were anxieties with TMG’s unique though undeniably successful process.

“The recording part was uncertain,” said Gerard Cole. “I wanted to move faster but Tate had a system,” Cole continued chuckling, “I didn’t have as much patience as the people in the Midwest. They are very laid back.”

The investment was another consideration, Cole added. Many outsiders openly scoffed at the idea of paying to record and release their own music versus the more traditional record label system, he said. Undeterred, Cole was already familiar having employed the same tactic of personal investment with his own daughter when it came time for college. According to Cole, your actions illustrate your commitment to the task.

As for VOG, the Tate offer has been strictly beneficial, Cole said.

“Each and every dept has been very supportive. When it was done absolutely everyone told me this is a very professional package,” Cole said. “I pressed harder but if you have money invested, make calls and get it right. Don’t complain if you don’t reach out. You have to be on top of own game. Strive for perfection; be patient but strive for perfection. Make sure each stage is at its best and correct for every level. When you get to the end, you will see it all come together and you will be satisfied.

“We haven’t even scratched the surface,” Cole said

We're thrilled to have on board one of our rare local musicians (so many of our artists are all over the nation, so it's rare to have an actual Okie!), Kate Eacret. Kate celebrated her contract signing with family and friends, and she sums it up more eloquently than I could, so I'll let her do the talking:

As promised I have attached pictures from the night that I signed the contract. It was an awesome night with a group of my incredible and supportive friends. We started the night off with prayer and then I went ahead and signed the contract. After all the initialing and signing was done we all had ice cream sundaes since ice cream is one of my all time favorite things. The night ended with a full out "jam" session. Most of the people that came over were people that I have led worship with or that have been a part of music in my life to this point . It was a blast to get to just have a worship time with the people that support me the most. Most of the pictures are of me actually signing but I also included the final group picture that we took. I love the fact that you can tell in their smiles how excited they were for me. I am very excited to start this new journey and be a part of Tate Music Group. I love how God continues to paint the picture of my life one brush stroke at a time. At times it can be frustrating not to see the final project but I know that as long as I put him first and trust completely in him the outcome will be perfect. As of right now- It's looking pretty great :)

New Tate Music Group Studios

Several weeks ago, we opened up our brand new Tate Music Group studios. Four-thousand square feet of custom-designed space strictly for our artists! I just got my hands on some new images from the space, so here they are!

This is our building. The space under the TMG sign is Studio A. The space to the left of it is our administrative office, which also includes 5 mixing rooms, 3 whisper rooms, and our producers' offices. The space further down is the Artist Suite, where artists can stay while they're in town or just hang out while taking breaks from recording. It includes a living room, office area, dining area, bedroom, and kitchen.

Lee Greenwood Officially Signs with Tate Music Group

American Patriot and Country Music Superstar Lee Greenwood (singer/songwriter of "God Bless the USA") is officially signed to Tate Music Group for a Gospel album and has also signed a book deal with Tate Publishing!

The Mistake Artists Make

My wife and I traveled for over 25 years speaking, singing, and conducting seminars and conferences across the US and even overseas. We averaged about 40+ events per year for a quarter of a century. Much of what Tate Publishing and Tate Music Group does for authors and artists is a direct result of our experiences, both good and bad. They say no teacher is more effective than experience and we can certainly vouch for that. Many horrible hotels, hours and hours in a car with kids asleep in the back seat, endless hours in airports, small record and book sales and low payment for services and work, work, work. When I was in the Marine Corps back in the 60’s one of our officers made a statement to us during an especially difficult time. “No one ever drowned in sweat,” he screamed. How true that is.

The sad issue today is that many new authors and artists think that because they have a good book or great music that it should just “happen” for them and that it is the total responsibility of the publisher or label to do all the work. It takes work, persistence, and lots of effort by the author or artist along side their publisher and label. Trust me, it is all worth it and Rita and I have a million good memories as a result of those years and made a fine living on the road. You can too if that is your dream, if you are willing to work with your team.

Last fall I was outside our house standing in the driveway talking with my son Ryan, who is the effective President and CEO of our companies, about TMG issues when my cell phone rang. The voice on the other end was our good friend and country music legend, Kenny Rogers. He was calling about his upcoming trip to our location and wanted to go over a few things with me and Ryan. Here is the “kicker” to the conversation. I said, “Kenny, you sound a bit tired my friend!” He replied, “Just a bit Richard. We have the Fiftieth Anniversary tour coming up in January with Dolly Parton and I have been working ten hours a day on the phone and on the computer calling venues, newspapers, radio and TV stations, and promoters working to get the crowds out. I have been doing this for half a century and it is still a lot of work.” Kirk Webster, who works with us out of Nashville and manages Dolly Parton, told me at our dinner there recently, “Richard, I have never seen anyone work harder than Dolly. She is after it hours and hours every day to stay successful.” Lee Greenwood who is a new part of our music and publishing family and the author of “God Bless the USA” told us in the conference room at his last visit that he worked for years and years in every kind of venue that would book him, large or small before his career took off and he became the legend he is today. Two time country music artist of the year Neal McCoy is doing several projects with us. He was Entertainer of the Year TWICE and said to me his bus one night after a packed out show, “It took me 13 years Richard before I had a hit. 13 years of any and every kind of gig until things took off. I work harder today than ever to keep us on the road doing what I love.” We love our relationship with the Oak Ridge Boys and their long time manager Jim Halsey. I was visiting with Joe Bonsall when the “Boys” were here recently and I asked him (they still do over 100 shows a year) what he would tell some of our new and aspiring authors and artists. He did not even hesitate. “They have to be willing to work. They have to be willing to sing or speak to 5 just like they would to 5,000. Most people think they should get their break because of the record label. Not so. It takes the label and the artist working hard every day. You don’t deserve that booking, you have to work for it and it HAS to be about your music or the message of your book first of all.”

Our marketing and publicists work hard to make each artist and each author as successful as possible. But, the biggest mistake I see authors and artists make is to think they deserve it and it should just “happen.” It takes hard work even after you have become a legend in the industry. Just ask Kenny Rogers.

Lee Greenwood visits Tate Music Group

Country music icon Lee Greenwood, best known for his amazing hit song “God Bless the USA” and for twice being named CMA Male Vocalist of the Year, visited the Tate Publishing and Tate Music Group offices recently to discuss his future book and music projects. Mr. Greenwood performed “God Bless the USA” to honor local veterans during his visit. We are honored to have hosted him and look forward to future developments as they continue to unfold.

1. Tate Publishing & Enterprises is announcing the release of its first magazine. We will be publishing Variance Magazine later this summer, which will cover topics of books, music, media, and industry news that you need to know. Subscribe for free now at www.VarianceMagazine.com.

2. Tate Music Group has acquired a new studio location that is currently under construction and set for a summer opening. The 4,000 square foot space will include a state-of-the-art studio that will include a viewing area for friends and family to observe, private vocal booths, and even an apartment for artists to stay while in town to record.

We're very excited about the continual growth and further expansion of Tate Music Group. And I promise to post pics of the studio soon!

Being Brought Before Great Men

I was thinking today about the scripture out of Proverbs 18:16 – A man’s gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men. I know God has blessed me with the gift of music, and I want to share this gift with the world. In doing so, I am not pursuing it for own personal gain, but for the advancement of the kingdom. I believe that God has brought me before great men, and for me that has been Tate Music Group. I knew that when I signed with Tate that I was making the right decision. I had prayed over this decision, and only being left with a feeling of peace. When signing the contract I read the “Mission Statement” and knew that they were Christ focused. This was the kind of people I wanted to partner with.

Tate as a company operates their business with an attitude of excellence. My experience all started with the director of acquisitions Brianne Webb who explained, directed, and gave me comfort about signing to the record label. I have worked side-by-side with my producer Jameson Reynolds, and watch him pour his heart and soul into my project. I saw the excellence of Janae Glass create a superb representation for the cover of my new release, “I Know That You Can Hear Me.” There are so many others who are working extremely hard to make this project a success. I can’t thank everyone enough for their dedication, and commitment.

During my visit to Oklahoma for the “Artist of the Year” contest I was able to get to know the staff, and their families on a more intimate level. I walked away from that experience feeling so excited about this new chapter in my life. Everyone I met was excited about their job, and their role in the company. There was no “I” in the vocabulary of anyone who I came into contact with. They all operated and functioned as a body, and they get things done with the highest level of excellence.

Many great artists are signing to the label, and having great success. If you feel God is leading you in this direction, pray about it, ask for God’s leading. Know that if you sign with Tate you’re not being scammed, but it’s an opportunity to make the vision God has placed in your heart become a reality.

Tate Music Group is quickly becoming recognized as one of the best record labels to partner with. Remember that the investment you are sowing into your ministry is small in comparison to the investment they are putting into you. They also, give you the opportunity to get that money back. Who does that? All you got to do is work hard, and be committed. Know that you are being brought before great men.

Congratulations to Chuck Tocco, Tate Music Group's Artist of the Year! Chuck blew away the judges and walked away with $15,000, a second contract with TMG, a photoshoot, radio promotion, and numerous other opportunities in the industry!

Voices of Glory signs with Tate Music Group!

Tate Music Group is proud to announce the newest addition to its artist line-up, The Voices of Glory. Tate Music Group sought to sign The Voices of Glory to its label after the three singers captured America’s attention on NBC’s America’s Got Talent. TMG will promote the group’s talent through performances, radio airplay, nationwide media exposure, and other events. Their album is expected to release in the summer of 2010.

The Voices of Glory are a group of siblings whose unique style of singing harmonies makes them stand out. Michael, Avery, and Nadia started singing together in 2007 after their mother, Felicia, was in a head-on car collision by a drunk driver. She was seriously injured and in a coma. They serenaded their mother for months and she eventually came out of the coma and started rehabilitation. This wasn’t the end of the kids’ singing, however. They started traveling to nursing homes and other hospitals in an effort to help other patients. Participating in “America's Got Talent,” the group made it to the top five out of more than 100,000 contestants.

In addition to signing with TMG, The Voices of Glory have received a contract to headline their own show for one full year in Branson, Missouri, the location of which will be announced later this month. The show will be combined with a 48-state tour, both beginning in April 2010. The Voices of Glory will begin the New Year performing on January 18 at the “World Famous Arena,” Madison Square Garden during a celebration for Martin Luther King. The performance will take place during the New York Knicks game against the Detroit Pistons.

Dear Brianne,

Hello, I hope all is well with you and yours. I just wanted to drop a few lines of sincere gratitude to you and TMG. I wouldn't in a million years imagined all that has transpired this year in my life being yoked up with you all. You don't know how happy I am that I didn't sit on the music that I wrote and let it go stagnant, I'm truly blessed to have you and TMG consider me and my music and for you to see and hear something in that submission.

I know I've asked and continue to ask many questions; I don't mean to be a pest-lol, I'm just new at this and ya'll know that. But never the less, you and all that I have dealt with at TMG have been friendly and nothing less than A-1 professional. I don't know who made the decisions to assign me with the folks I've been assignd with during the process so far but it has seemed like the vision from the artwork with Cole Roberts to the music production with Jameson Reynolds had been pulled right from my mind and straight into theirs without incident. I really enjoyed my studio time with Jameson-he's a really cool guy and I believe he can read minds because I'd describe what I heard or envisioned and bam, it was done!

I'm working with Chris Rutherford right now and he's great. Things are going pretty good so far. A couple of Georgia radio stations have picked me up and CDs are selling. I've been asked if I would be interested in doing a radio interview the first of the year, so I'm excited about that too.

Well I guess I'll go for now, again I can't say it enough ....Thank You!!!

The last couple of weeks have been very exciting around TMG! Win came up to visit us from Florida (along with his managers), and happened to be in the office at the same time Kenny was in meeting with us about potential book and music deals, and they got to meet!

MUSTANG, OK – This week, Oklahoma-based record label Tate Music Group (TMG) has confirmed a new strategic sponsor partnership with the renowned Billboard World Song Contest.

As a sponsor for the contest, TMG will select one Grand Prize Winner to be awarded a TMG new artist development contract that includes recording a full album, event booking, and radio and web promotion. Plans for immediate single release to CCM radio and appearance at Kansas City’s

“Rock The Light” festival this weekend

NASHVILLE, September 2, 2009 – Hit singer/songwriter/producer Regie Hamm scored his biggest hit this year with the solo-written, 16-week No. 1 song “Time of My Life” for American Idol’s David Cook, and today he has signed a combined book and record deal with the Oklahoma-based Tate Publishing and Tate Music Group.

The announcement will be made formal with Hamm’s appearances this weekend at Kansas City’s “Rock The Light” festival. Tate Music Group plans an immediate single release to CCM radio, followed by a CD release and book detailing his inspirational story.

The book tells the story of Hamm’s adoption of an orphaned Chinese girl and the life-changing events surrounding it, including composing the hit song, “Time of My Life,” which was inspired by his emotional journey these past six years.

With 21 No. 1 songs to his credit as a songwriter, and a Top 20 Adult Contemporary hit as an artist, Hamm is well-poised for the single release to CCM radio. The single will be followed by the book, as well as a 20-song CD, tentatively called “Full Circle.” The project will include nine No. 1 songs written by Hamm, and eleven new originals. Hamm says the 20-song project is truly about his life and his journey.

“You can’t see the circle while you’re making it,” Hamm said. “Only special moments can allow you to see all of it: China… babies… songs… music… dreams… success… happiness. They all mean different things to me because of what I have been through. Any plan I could’ve developed would never have been as beautiful and unexpected. This one was divine.”

Tate Publishing, based in Oklahoma City, was founded in 2001 and has become one of the fastest growing publishing companies in the nation. They recently expanded to include record label Tate Music Group, and are distributed nationwide through Universal and Ingram.

LeMars, Iowa—An authentic cowboy from Billings, Montana, will take home the prestigious RRMC "Country-Western CD of the Year" Award this year, it has just been announced by the Rural Roots Music Commission. The award goes to T.J. Casey, a long-time cowboy singer, poet, songwriter, performer, and recording artist. The name of the CD is Pure “D” Cowboy.

According to the Rural Roots Music Commission president, Sheila Everhart, "We have been nurturing upper midwest traditional and old-time music for over 35 years now, through the Commission, and through our annual fund raising festival in LeMars, Iowa. Our goal is to preserve the music of our settlers, homesteaders, and pioneers, and we were very happy to find a musical project as definitive as this project by T.J. Casey. His career has spanned an incredible amount of experience and adventure in the cowboy and country-western field of music.”

The award will be made at the 34th Annual National Old Time Country, Bluegrass, and Folk Music Festival, August 31-September 6, 2009, at the Plymouth County Fairgrounds in LeMars, Iowa. …

The CD T.J. Casey recorded was auditioned by Tradition Magazine to glowing reviews. He will receive the award at the annual convention of the RRMC on Saturday, September 5, at 4:30 p.m. on the main stage, where he will also be performing.

SO YOU'RE CONSIDERING TMG AS YOUR LABEL...

Okay...
So I'm getting a TON of questions from great indie artists everywhere about the integrity of Tate Music Group. This blog should give you a good idea what to expect if and when you sign with TMG.
First of all let me go on record saying that TMG is an amazing group of thinkers and business folks...heck their just awesome people! They are an integral part (if not the tip of the spear) in the future of the music industry and indie artists in particular at this stage in the game. My experience with them as their "artist of the year" for 2009 has been nothing but positive..
"Of course"...you're thinking to yourself "mr artist of the year"..."things are GREAT for you"..."but what about everyone who's NOT artist of the year???"
WELL...i'm glad you asked! Here's the long and short of what to expect when you sign with TMG:
DON'T expect an advance..meaning mad cash on the front end of your deal. These look attractive up front, but remember....this is a LOAN...it comes out of your hide later!!
DON'T expect a huge national push for your record. Tate are professionals in PARTNERING WITH INDIES to help them grow and make a living at your music.
1. They help you make an "easy on the wallet" record to kick-start your merch sales and make you credible in the industry. TRUST me...you'll be hard pressed to find someone that can make the quality of a record for the LITTLE amount of money you have to invest.
2. They give you a web-presence. They'll help you get your music distributed in the most accesible market known to human-kind: CYBERSPACE!! Yesssss...
3. They will help you develop best-practices in business to help YOU grow YOUR career. They will not do it FOR you...I think this is where people have gotten disgruntled with them in the past...you WILL NOT BE AN OVERNIGHT SUCCESS.
I have been doing this for 18 years.....and only now am I beginning to see MODERATE succes.. Patience is a virtue...
Bottom line: They are a great PARTNER for indies...they can help you in many ways to become successful and YES...even a full-time artist!
In my humble experience you can trust TMG...They've always done for me what they said they would do and I know many artists with them that are hard workers that aren't looking for a handout who are very pleased with TMG...I am one them.
I highly reccommend TMG to anyone who is serious about their music career.

MySpace is an incredibly important tool for artists. The very talented staff who were assigned to my project were nothing short of professional, talented, directive and encouraging. I have loved this journey. Tate Publishing, the parent company of Tate Music Group, was recently reviewed in a new book from author Mark Levine, who is a book publishing industry expert. Tate Publishing operates in much the same way as Tate Music Group, wherein authors maintain creative control, high royalties, and the rights to their book. Check out what Mr. Levine thought about our company once he had an opportunity to review our contract and see what we do for authors and artists:

I trashed Tate in earlier versions of this book. While I don’t apologize for it based on what I knew then (Tate wasn’t very forthcoming with information and wouldn’t provide a contract for me to look at), my opinion is now completely different.

Tate’s biggest problem is that it does a terrible job of demonstrating that it really does put in substantial money above what the author contributes to the publishing process. However, I wouldn’t have believed it, unless I saw it with my own eyes. Ryan Tate called me after reading this book and said, “You’ve got it all wrong. Come see what we’re doing down here.” I took him up on his offer. What I saw was an energetic staff of at least 60 people, including, 10 full-time editors, 15 illustrators, and 15 graphic designers. When you start adding up included items in every publishing package like complete editing, unlimited cover and interior changes that are available, Tate really is investing money in an author’s book.

Also, if you accept Tate’s numbers that they take 4-6% of 10,000 submissions a year, that’s about 500 books. If each author is paying $4,000 that is only $2,000,000. That amount of money can’t cover even the payroll. So, Tate has to be making money from sales of authors books to the public. It needs the portion of royalties and printing revenues to pay for its existence. The only way to get sales is to invest time and money to promote books. Is Tate putting in $20,000 toward every author’s book? Probably not. On some it might be more and on some it’s probably less. But, Tate is definitely investing money and resources to promote its authors books. It’s making a nice profit on the printing and taking a healthy royalty, but that’s not unlike any traditional publisher. Because the author is investing money up front, the royalty taken by Tate is substantially less than a totally traditional publisher would demand....It sounds ridiculous – you put in $4,000 and the publisher puts in $15,000-$20,000. In reality, those numbers are pretty accurate.

Tate is a solid choice with a great management, staff, and continuing vision. Tate doesn’t need to sell the sizzle. The facts are good enough.

Tate Music Group Turns the Music Industry on its Ear

This week at the GMA's, the president of Tate Music Group, Ryan Tate, was asked by a reporter for Billboard Magazine why on earth we would burst into the music industry now, at a time when it seems so many artists are unhappy with many labels. The reporter brought up the point that there so many artists who are unhappy with their labels and feel that by signing with a label, they are losing not only creative control, but the money they should rightly earn. Ryan's answer was, Why not now? This is the perfect time to come onto the scene, because we're the solution to so many problems in the industry today. Rather than taking rights, paying low royalties, and "owning" artists, Tate Music Group allows artists to maintain creative control, keep their rights, and earn some of the highest royalties in the industry. So it's the perfect time to come in and turn the industry on its ear.

On a related note, one of our executive staff members read the following excerpt from Seth Godin's book, Tribes: We Need You to Lead Us. It offers great insight into what's going on in the industry and what needs changed. I've highlighted what I think are the most applicable parts so that you may see exactly what it is that is causing Tate Music Group to stand head and shoulders above the rest.

Watching the Music Industry Die

It’s not as if they didn’t see it coming. It took almost a decade for this thriving, hyperprofitable industry to cave in on itself. The reasons are truly simple:

Music industry executives didn’t have the heretic the needed; no one stood up and made change happen.
They forgot to embrace their tribe.

Taking a look at the music business is a useful education for any heretic. It demonstrates how exceedingly intelligent people in a fairly new industry willfully ignored the world around them and hid. Those lessons apply to just about every industry you can imagine. The first rule the music business failed to understand is that, at least at first, the new thing is rarely as good as the old thing was. If you need the alternative to be better than the status quo from the very start, you’ll never begin.

Soon enough, the new thing will be better than the old thing. But if you wait until then, it’s going to be too late. Feel free to wax nostalgic about the old thing, but don’t fool yourself into believing that it’s going to be here forever. It won’t.

The second rule they missed is that past performance is no guarantee of future success.

Every single industry changes and, eventually, fades. While you may have made money doing something a certain way yesterday, there’s no reason to believe you’ll succeed at it tomorrow.

The music business had a spectacular run alongside the baby boomers. Starting with the Beatles and Dylan, music industry executives kept minting money. The expanded purchasing power of teens, combined with the birth of rock, the invention of the transistor, and changing social mores meant a long, long growth curve.

As a result, the music business built huge systems. They created top-heavy organizations, dedicated superstores, a loss-leader touring industry, extraordinarily high profit margins, MTV, and more. It was a well-greased system, but the key question is: Why did it deserve to last forever?

It didn’t. Yours doesn’t either.

The music business was built around five pillars:
Free radio promotion
A limited number of competing music labels.
The high cost of production, requiring musicians to get financing from labels
The Top 40 hits-based focus of the baby boomer generation
A high-margin, nonreproducible medium (the LP)

Notice that none of these five pillars has anything to do with tribes or leadership.

One by one, each of these five pillars has crumbled over the past five years. The result is that while there is still plenty of music, the music business is in trouble.

The innovation: used digital distribution and the Internet like radio, but do it better. Be in the service/souvenir business, instead of suing customers and yearning for the old days. Find thousands of tribes for thousands of musicians and lead them where they want to go.

Tate Music Group artists get a lot of things. Production of an album, feedback from producers, creative control, graphic design of an album, marketing, nationwide distribution, manufacturing, free product, radio promotion, event booking, and publicity are all part of the deal. On top of that, Tate Music Group artists also get a custom-made electronic press kit!

Electronic press kits (EPKs) are extremely important in today's industry. They're used by venues and media outlets as a way to get to know an artist. EPKs include information such as a bio, photos, music samples, recent press, and performance requirements. At Tate Music Group, our marketing reps use our artists' EPKs to present them to possible media outlets and potential venues in order to introduce the artist to an establishment. This dramatically increases an artist's chance of booking a gig or getting press coverage.

The Artist's Perspective of the Tate Music Group Contract

I've heard a few new perspectives on the Tate Music Group contract over the last couple of weeks:

Two weeks ago I was speaking with an artist from Florida who compared the artist participation investment to college tuition. Genius! He talked about the fact that when you pay to go to college, you do so because you know what you'll get out of it: an education. When you go to college, there's no guarantee that you'll graduate with honors or land your dream job, but you go knowing that you'll likely be better off because of it. You'll have far more opportunities due to your college experience. Similarly, with Tate Music Group, you know that you're guaranteed to end up with a product that you love. No one can know whether you'll win any awards or top the charts, etc., but will you be better off with the opportunities Tate Music Group provides? We think so!
Today I talked to an artist who has won a televised award for being the world's fastest rapper. He's been waiting for an opporunity through which he can get out his music (not just fast rapping, but also phenomenal gospel and inspirational music!). After reviewing his contract, he sent me an email that said, "I'm no lawyer, but this is the best contract that I've ever been presented with. You guys are truly a blessing." I often advise artists to have attorneys review the contract, because every attorney that I know of who has reviewed it has had nothing but great things to say about the contract. After having an attorney review our offer, this artist called me and said, "My attorney said the same thing that you told me: that this is the best contract in the industry!"
I also heard from an artist this week who called me to ask about studio time. He said, "If I come to record in your studio, I have to pay for that studio time and the musicians, right?" I said, "Nooooo! Anything that we do for you in house is covered by us. That means studio time, musicians, all production of your album, graphic design, manufacturing, and even all of the marketing and distribution!" He was thrilled, of course! That's my favorite kind of call, because all I have to do is educate someone about the contract, and they automatically understand the value of it.

Congratulations to Jeff Chandler, who was named the Tate Music Group Artist of the Year last Friday!

After hundreds of artists submissions, thousands of votes, and months of preparation, it came down to our top five finalists playing and singing their hearts out in front of a live audience, a web audience, and a panel of judges. Sally Jayne, The Cliftones, Ron Walters and Sarah Scharff all gave a stellar performance, but there could only be one winner. This year, that winner was singer/songwriter Jeff Chandler. Just one more way that Tate Music Group is providing artists with opportunities to use their giftings.

Jeff received $15,000, and he'll also receive a video shoot, a photo shoot, a second contract, and numerous opportunities to showcase at events around the nation.

From NYC to OKC: Eric G's Tour of Tate Music Group

Tate Music Group was thrilled to welcome our newest signed artist, Eric Garzon, to our facilities earlier this week!

Eric narrowly escaped the fourteen inches of snow in New York to fly into sunny Oklahoma City for an afternoon to tour our facilities, meet our staff, and sign his contract. Eric sings original R&B Christian music, and we can't wait to release his album later this year.

A few of our staff members, including myself, had the pleasure of hosting Eric on his tour and to lunch. After meeting with a graphic designer, producer, and marketing rep, Eric also got to see our printing facility (where we print both books and CDs) and meet with Dr. Tate and Ryan Tate (founder and president, respectively).

FAQ: How long is my contract with TMG?

Artists often ask me how long a contract is with Tate Music Group. This is one of the many highlights of our contract, which we feel sets us apart from so many other options in this industry.

When an artist signs with Tate Music Group, he or she is signing on for the production, graphic design, manufacturing, distribution, marketing, and promotion of one album, for the life of that album. This means that artists are not tied down to being with Tate Music Group for x-number of years or x-number of albums. A couple of months ago, I spoke with a Christian R&B artist who desperately wanted to sign with us. Unfortunately, he was already under contract with a secular label that didn't know how to adequately promote his Christian music. Although we would have loved to have him on our label, his contract stated that he owed five years or five albums (whichever happened first) to that company. Even though he was unhappy with what he was getting from that label, he was stuck there for four more years. I hate hearing stories like that!

On the flip side, Tate Music Group offers a non-exclusive contract for one album that lasts for the life of that album. That means that Tate Music Group artists can benefit from our manufacturing, distribution, marketing and promotion for as long as they're signed with Tate Music Group, which we hope is forever! The benefit of this part of our contract is threefold, because:

if an artist receives an offer from another label to release a different project, the artist could do that, while still using our services to continue the distribution and marketing of the album they released with Tate Music Group.
if an artist receives an offer from another label to release the same project that he or she released with Tate Music Group, the artist would have the choice of either staying with us or moving to another label. This is possible because Tate Music Group artists keep all of the rights to their music, lyrics, and album artwork.
if it took an artist 3 years to sell the 2,500 units required to earn back the artist investment, then we still give the artist investment back to the artist 3 years from now!

Amazing, right? I know! These kinds of freedoms and services are unheard of in this industry. But we pride ourselves on these freedoms because we know it's the best way to truly serve an artist.

Kevin Rogers of Tuttle, Oklahoma, just signed with Tate Music Group. Congratulations, Kevin! We had the great pleasure of having Kevin in to sign his contract and take a few photos.

Kevin writes Christian music and has coincidentally already recorded several songs with Tate Music Group producer Jeff Lee. They expect to collaborate on Kevin's next project in coming months. We can't wait to hear the final product, and as soon as we get it manufactured, distributed, and begin the marketing of his music, you can hear it too!

Congratulations to Keith Allen Ball, who as of today is officially a signed artist with Tate Music Group. We couldn't be happier!

Keith recently let me know that he created a blogspot, not only to keep up with the news atTate Music Group, our studio, and our music promotion, but also to market his own music. Now that's the kind of artist we're looking for: a self-promoter--someone who understands that the music itself is only a part of this industry; the business is what makes everything happen.

Feedback from Tate Music Group Artists

Last week I posted some comments from a TMG group, Upperdeck, that was about to sign with us (they officially signed last week!), and I got the below comment from another Tate Music Group artist that I wanted to share with you. As with Upperdeck, I was a little skeptical of TMG's offer. Isn't the record company supposed to cover these costs? But, through prayer and a reminder of artists such as Elvis (who paid Sun out of his own pocket) I came to the conclusion that the risk was minimal. With millions of people buying music, how hard can it be to sell 2,500 copies? Bottom line - put out a great product and recouping your investment will be easy! And as Upperdeck pointed out, if God is with you, success is His. Not in personal monetary gain, but in helping further His Kingdom and bringing others to Salvation. To God be the glory! -Chef Bob

Tate Music Group Artists on the Radio

One of the benefits enjoyed by artists signed to Tate Music Group is radio airplay. When an artist signs with our record label, they get more than just production, graphic design, manufacturing, nationwide distribution, and publicity; Tate Music Group artists are guaranteed a marketing rep who will partner with them for the life of their music. One of this rep's functions is to get radio airplay for the artist on a local, regional, and sometimes national level.

Tate Music Group has many connections already established within the industry, including relationships with Clear Channel radio and several networks of Christian radio stations. This means we have access to getting radio airplay on nearly 500 stations nationwide! A couple of these networks include Refuge Radio, CSN Radio, and WCTL Radio.

Tate Music Group in the words of a Tate Music Group band: Upperdeck

If you've read my blog before, you've probably also been to my MySpace page. In that case, you probably noticed that I post many of the blogs that I write here over on my blog on that site, too. I got a great comment over there from an artist that I wanted to share with you here, too!

Following my MySpace post on November 19, "The Heart of Tate Music Group," I got an insightful post from the soon-to-be-signed Tate Music Group band Upperdeck. Upperdeck is a Christian metal group from Maryland, often described as a modern Iron Maiden (though every time I listen, I can't deny the semblance of Evanescence). They're fantastic and have a true heart for ministry and a passion for getting out their message through music. Here's what they wrote:

Praise God!!! While reviewing the contract we were offered by Tate Music Group (TMG) we were told by many people and internet reviews that if we needed to pay a label then it was a scam. After long hours of prayer with each other and individually the Lord kept telling us that this is where we should be. "If God is with us, then who can be against us" With that said we re-read the final page of the contract. This company works for and toward the kingdom of God!! The realization we came up with is this: Just like a mission's trip, and we believe we are always on mission to spread the good news of Christ, God will provide everything we need to do His work. This includes the upfront investment into a project that He leads anyway. When we are asked by the Lord to go to Africa or Bolivia or anywhere on mission's we don't question payment or money so why should be now. TMG is not just a christian record label they are a m Cistry and we very blessed to have the opportunity to work with them.

We haven't signed the contract yet but right after we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior Christ Jesus we plan on signing!!

Tate Music Group Guarantees Production Quality

Imagine going into a studio where you've got studio musicians at your disposal, a producer giving input on your sound, vocals, and style, an engineer to make everything radio ready, and a guarantee that those people won't stop working until you achieve a sound you love. To top it all off, it's free. Welcome to Tate Music Group!

I just got off the phone with a man in Fort Worth who said his biggest problems in recording his music are that (1) he can't find a producer who will commit the time needed to making his project quality and (2) producers who do commit the time are too focused on their own vision for his music to listen to his input. At Tate Music Group, when we produce your music, the first step is getting your input on how you want it to sound and the style you have in mind. The production process is truly a partnership, and our contract states that nothing can move forward to manufacturing without the artist's approval. That means that if you don't like it, we keep working on it!

After explaining our process to this aspiring artist in Fort Worth, he's decided to send me some samples for my review and hopes to have the chance to work with a label like Tate Music Group who will meet his needs -- both throughout the recording process and into the marketing and distribution phase.

Do's and Don'ts of getting Tate Music Group's Attention

Looking for a record deal? If you'd like to submit your music to Tate Music Group, here's a bit of advice:

DO:
1. Do be sure to include current contact info. If you're emailing your sample directly to one of our acquisitions reps, please include name, mailing address, phone number, your sample, and a link to your MySpace page, web site, or EPK if you've got one.

2. Do read the FAQs. Some time during the submission process, you will receive our frequently asked questions. Reading these will serve you well, and if your acquisitions rep knows that you read them, he or she will be impressed.

DO NOT:
1. Do not submit any inappropriate material. It will be automatically rejected. We are a Christian company, and we do work with all genres of music, but we do have high standards of both quality and content.

2. Do not send me more than 4 songs to review. Pick your favorite two or three songs of your original material and submit those.

FAQ: Can I Release Cover Songs on My Album with TMG?

At Tate Music Group, one of the best parts of our offer is that the artist keeps his or her rights. Due to that fact, it's important that the artist truly does have the rights to record each song. Since we so largely benefit up-and-coming and first-time artists, I often talk to artists who have only recorded a demo and are early in their songwriting career and therefore don't have a large library of songs yet. In order to write enough music and lyrics for a full CD, these artists need several more well-written songs.

Rather than taking months to write a few more good songs or, worse yet, quickly forcing a few bad ones, I sometimes recommend that Tate Music Group artists either record a couple of public domain songs or obtain licenses to be able to record and release cover songs.

Public domain songs are songs to which no one holds the rights. This is usually because either the copyright has expired or the song's author is unknown. In general, a song's copyright is expired (and therefore is considered public domain) if the song was written more than 95 years ago or if the song's author has been dead for 70 years. Some examples of public domain songs are "Amazing Grace," "America the Beautiful," "Jingle Bells," and "Jesus Christ is Risen Today." You can find lists of these online.

In order to obtain the license to record and distribute a cover song, you'll need to do your research to find the song's publisher. You'll need to acquire permission and talk to him or her about the process of acquiring those licenses. A good place to find out more about how to do this is the Harry Fox Agency.

Once you've got all the rights and permissions squared away to each song, that's when Tate Music Group will go to work on producing your album, creating the graphic design, manufacturing, distributing nationwide, and marketing your album.

So do the leg work to pick out your songs, and then let the fun (and hard work) begin!

It's about the Artist; It's not about Tate Music Group

Having burst onto the scene in early 2008, Tate Music Group has already received much attention among the industry. It's been a great experience and honor to be able to educate those who are interested by explaining exactly what we do for our artists that gives them every chance to succeed in this difficult industry. One of my favorite parts of my job is speaking with artists once they've reviewed our offer. Upon reviewing our contract offer, artists are impressed and excited about the opportunities Tate Music Group provides.

Already this week I've been told by an artist that he was thankful because his every question was answered and that in reviewing the contract, it's clear that TMG truly has the artist's best interest at heart. He then said, "It's about the artist; it's not about TMG." I wrote it down because it so perfectly summed up what we're about. The fact that we don't take artists' rights, we give them royalties among the highest in the industry, and we provide a creative partnership is evidence that our primary interest is indeed what's best for the artist. Tate Music Group Doesn't want to Take Your Rights!

When looking for a record label or any other avenue through which you might promote your music, one of the key things that you need to remember is that your rights should always be yours! This should be one of the first things you look for in any offer or contract that comes your way.

At Tate Music Group, it's important to us that you keep your rights. Even if we provide the complete arrangements for your music and do all of your album artwork from scratch, we'll still file those copyrights in your name. You'll hold all of those rights, and even if you received a better offer years down the line or decided that you wanted to do something different with your music, you'll still retain your rights.

How can we make such an offer? We're so sure that we'll give you all of the best opportunities to find your success that we're confident that you won't want to leave Tate Music Group. We look forward to a long and successful partnership with each of our artists!

Just as children have a greater chance of achieving success if their parents set a strong example, any new company is far more likely to succeed if it's formed under a successful parent company. Tate Music Group is blessed to be in just that scenario. While Tate Music Group is closing in on its first year, our parent company, Tate Publishing, is closing in on its twelfth, and each year Tate Publishing continues to be a leader in its industry. 2008 has been no exception.
